Every Nevadan deserves to feel safe where they live, work, and send their children to school. Public safety is a core responsibility of the government, and Maria is committed to restoring a justice system that protects law‑abiding families and holds criminals accountable. She is proudly pro‑law enforcement and will work to reverse soft‑on‑crime policies that have made our communities less safe and demoralized the men and women who protect them. Maria will support legislation to ensure police departments are fully staffed with well‑trained officers prepared to respond to violent crime, drug trafficking, and repeat offenders. That includes investing in modern equipment, officer safety, and mental‑health resources for first responders.
Maria knows that prosecutors and judges must also have the tools to keep dangerous criminals off the streets. While clerking for the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, Maria authored an admonishment for fentanyl traffickers that is now used county‑wide. However, 2019 legislation dangerously weakened laws and made possession of lethal amounts of fentanyl only a minor offense: Nevada was left with weaker theft penalties than California. We must restore the tools prosecutors and judges need to ensure public safety. Governor Joe Lombardo has started to reverse these harmful policies, and Maria will be a strong partner in Carson City who will work with law enforcement and prosecutors to enforce meaningful sentences and put public safety first.
