About Maria

Maria Thompson grew up in San Diego, California, the daughter of a highly decorated Army veteran, now laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. She studied Media & Mass Communication at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, launching her career as a reporter in Omaha, Nebraska, where she covered the 2016 Election.

Maria moved to Las Vegas in 2017 to produce the evening news for the NBC affiliate. Within two weeks of starting, she covered the One October mass shooting—an experience that shaped her dedication to public service and investigative journalism. Her investigative reporting won several state and regional awards for juvenile justice, child welfare, public records & accountability, and coverage of Presidential debates in Nevada.

Inspired to make a career change from within the system, Maria attended UNLV’s Boyd School of Law, graduating in the top 5% of her class with pro bono honors and was selected as commencement speaker.

Today, Maria is an associate attorney at Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith, defending Nevada’s businesses, doctors, hospitals, and casinos. Beyond her legal work, Maria serves as Vice President of the Southern Nevada Alumnae Chapter of Chi Omega, is a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and was a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada. She proudly calls Nevada home, along with her mother and older brother.
